More House Pix

Here is the kitchen. I'm afraid to use the stove because I don't want to get it dirty.

Settling In

I finally have the main floor unpacked and everything in place - for the most part. We (meaning Robert) still have boxes to unpack that are downstairs in the guest room and we have guests coming IN 2 WEEKS so need to get them outta there and go buy a bed.

More Snow Pix

You can see the snow isn't deep but it was pretty - and quite a surprise. We can't get a newspaper delivered out here so we're kind of out of touch. We DO have cable TV and internet but just have been enjoying the quiet. I just looked outside and the snow is already gone. It's just after noon.

Snow Day!

We have been enjoying the sunrises. We can lay in bed and get quite a color show over the mountains. This morning we woke up and it was gray and gloomy and I thought there wasn't much of a sunrise. I went into the bathroom and saw Robert's car out the window covered with snow! I went back in the bedroom and saw the sun glowing outside. I grabbed my camera and went out on the deck in my bathrobe & slippers to take these pictures of the sunrise. They didn't turn out well but the sun was just an orange ball coming over the mountains.

Moving Crew

We did feed the moving crew and allowed them a few breaks.
On Sunday, Miss Bobbie came up and helped out. We got most of the kitchen unpacked and put away which made things a lot easier after the move.
Our official moving day was the following Tuesday, Oct. 21. We had a local moving company (Gasperson - I chose them because I like the name) move the furniture. I don't think they even compared to the girls. Miss Bobbie came back and helped again.

Moving Weekend

This was our moving crew, Three Girls and a Truck. They were awesome. Erin came down to help us move boxes and Amy & Cheri volunteered to help. I don't think they all realized just HOW MANY boxes we had. They worked hard and we made 4 trips in the U-Haul with stuff.

Cheri single-handedly emptied the truck. Although, Amy is JUST AS STRONG as Cheri and she proved it.
Somehow I ended up with 2 pictures here of Cheri.

Moving Day Eve

I thought I should take some pictures of the inside of the house before we mess it up.

The dragonfly was laying on the kitchen floor when I came in. No, he wasn't trying to call for help on the cell phone. I left him there for Robert to dispose of. It turned out he was already dead. I guess it's better than the LIVE MOUSE that was in the kitchen when Carol & Al were here.

Home Sweet Home

We finally moved into the new house. I took these pictures before we moved in. My car looks right at home.

A Stitch in Time

Today we found out our new house is less than 30 minutes from the nearest emergency room. Robert was hanging some boards on the wall in the carport storage room to attach storage brackets to and he tripped and fell with a 6' board in one hand and a drill in the other. Fortunately, he didn't do a lot of damage to himself but managed to slash his fingers - one in particular. He was bleeding quite a bit and the fact that he takes blood-thinners makes it hard to determine how bad the wound is without looking at it. Well, I couldn't look at it without fainting and as luck would have it one of the ladies who was there cleaning our house is a nurse. She looked at it and determined it needed stitches and bandaged it up for him. I, being the good wife that I am, told him, "Stay on the tarp!" so he wouldn't get blood on our decking and stonework. Robert wanted to finish his project but I took the nurse's advice and we went to McDowell Hospital. Three hours and five stitches later we headed for home where he is resting comfortably watching football. Thank God it wasn't his drinkin' hand.

Even More Moreheads

After the house we went down to the waterfalls where we didn't see any bears. We went home to clean up then raced to the Grove Park Inn to catch the sunset. It was really crowded there. Sunday morning we read in the paper that there was a big Democratic rally and Obama had made a surprise visit! We then had dinner at Robert's favorite place, Rezaz.

Sunday we walked around downtown Asheville and did a little window shopping. Robert & Al were looking for good places for their naps.

We had lunch at the Mellow Mushroom before taking Carol & Al to the airport.

More Moreheads

After we scared the bears away we went back to the house to eat our tuna sandwiches. We went down to Robert's "Secret View." Then we walked down to the road where Carol & I re-enacted our little near-fatal "incident" we had last January. Only this time we did it without the car and Robert behind the wheel.

Moreheads

This weekend our friends from Michigan, Carol & Al, stopped in for about 5 minutes. Actually, they spent the weekend. They were visiting some dear old friends of Al's in Nashville then drove over to Asheville on Friday afternoon. We went out to the house and had our usual sunset cocktail hour on the deck then went back to our (rental) house for dinner. Saturday we showed them Black Mountain and drove up to Montreat.

Al & Carol at Lake Susan.
After Montreat we went to Creston to show Al the rest of the development. We drove up to the community center and on the way down ran into a mama bear and 2 cubs. (If you click on the picture you can see them running into the woods.)

House Update

We drove back to Asheville Wednesday and went straight out to the house but by the time we got there it was dark so couldn't see much. We went back today in the daylight and so much had been done while we were gone. We now have light fixtures and light switches, outlets, ceiling fans, toilets, sinks and faucets and we have appliances!

Parting Shots of Detroit

As we headed south on I-75 Wednesday morning I was content knowing that I had 2 dozen tamales in the cooler, 4 Family Size (of Better Made chips) in the back of the car and I had just settled into my seat to read the Detroit Free Press for the last time for who-knows-how-long when, suddenly, I smelled it before I saw it. The Rouge Plant. Southwest Detroit. I knew I had to take a few pictures before it was gone. The smells of my childhood when the wind was blowing in the right direction. Why did I move to the mountains?

After-Dinner Tricks

After dinner at Dan & Susan's the boys were showing us their latest auditions for Stupid Kid Tricks, I mean, they were showing off their many talents in case they ever ran away to join the zoo and had to live as monkeys.

Patrick was just showing off his muscles.
