More House Pix

This week at the house the hardwood floors are being sanded & finished so we don't have access to the main & upper floors. Everything was cleaned up so nicely over the weekend I had to take pictures.

Painters No More

We finished the painting! (Well, I did. Robert is at the house today putting a second coat on the walls. He ran out of paint Sunday.) Miss Bobbie came up on Saturday and whipped us into shape. She klunked our heads together like coconuts and told us to quit crying like little girls and act like men and we got the job done! The first picture is the media room. Notice the fine paint job on the doors & trim.
The rest of the pictures are of areas we are NOT painting. The front entry, "butler's pantry" in the mud room, and my attic room. As the (real) painter said, "It's yeller!"

Desperate Housepainters

I haven't been able to blog for awhile because Robert signed us up to be painters. He found out we could save $$ by painting the lower level of the house ourselves so he volunteered us for the job. Then he went to Chicago for four days. So, I have been painting non-stop for two weeks (except for the day our dear Charles died.) If you've never painted before you might say, "Why the Hell is it taking you so long?" Well, we have ALOT of windows and atrium doors so we have only been painting the trim this whole time. That's one coat of primer plus two coats of paint. It's very tedious and my body is wearing out. The good thing about it (besides saving $$) is that we're there everyday to see the progress. Here are some pictures of the kitchen, living room, fireplace and master bath. Next week the hardwood floors will be sanded so the house will be off-limits.

House Update

Here is what's going on at the house. This is a picture of the dining room and into the kitchen. The carpenter is installing beams on the ceiling of the living room and dining room. The ceiling and walls are a 1 x 6 wainscot. The tapered posts at the raised kitchen counter are the same wood as the kitchen cabinets and the area below the counter will be wooden panels with the same wood.
The painters are also working fast & furiously priming all the woodwork. Here is the mudroom/laundry room and the front hall.

Bearly Made It

I was out walking Tuesday morning about 8:30 minding my own business and was walking back up the hill and looked up and saw the biggest bear I've ever seen since we lived here. He was in the front yard of the house across the road and just below ours. He was probably about 100 feet away from me. Luckily, I was at the foot of the driveway of the house 2 down from us and there was a car in front. I walked very quickly up the front walk which seemed like it was a mile and got my cell phone out and was trying to call Robert while keeping an eye on the bear which was walking towards me. At the same time, I was trying to size up the situation in case nobody answered the door. Luckily, the homeowner, Elizabeth, answered right away. I said, "There's a huge bear out there!" and she said, "Cool, I'll get my camera." (First she let me in.) The bear was still walking towards us and by the time she got her camera he was at her house on the road. In the meantime, I called Robert and told him to come and get me because there was a bear and he said, "Are you sure?" Now, I don't know about anyone else but when I'm making a bear emergency call I don't want to have to spend time convincing my rescuer that I'm sure it was a bear and not a squirrel. I managed to convince him that yes dear, it indeed was a bear and told him whose house I was in. A minute later he went speeding by to the NEXT house and we heard him honk the horn. I went out to the road to try to catch him and he came back to pick me up. When I asked why he went to the wrong house he said the bear was still in the road and he was trying to scare it into the woods. He was trying to save everybody. Oh - and yes, he went to the wrong house. I'll try to get a copy of the picture of the bear. So, what did I learn from this? 1.) Exercise can be dangerous. From now on I'll sit in front of the TV watching Regis & Kelly Lee instead of walking. 2.) If I do decide to walk again and run into a bear I'll know who NOT to call especially if there is no house to take refuge in. I'm better off throwing my cell phone at the bear because by the time Robert drives up and down the road trying to remember which house Elizabeth and Robert live in I could be mauled to death.

Erin's Visit

Erin came to visit for the long weekend. Saturday we went out to the house so she could see the progress and dance on the step. Then we had a barbeque at our (rental) house with Miss Bobbie, David, Erin's friends Amy & Cheri and another one of Erin's friends, Kelly, who just moved to Charlotte for a teaching position. Kelly also went to MSU and went to France with Erin for the Study Abroad program. Robert made his famous ribs and we had a good time. Sunday Erin took off with the girls and they went tubing. Monday she had to leave. Here she is saying good-bye to Charlie.

Construction Update

Here are a few updates starting with the stone retaining wall that runs along the driveway.

Next is the stairway in the front hall, the washer/dryer enclosure in the mud room and some built-in cabinets (no doors on them yet) in the mudroom and the tile in our shower.
