Memorial Weekend

Saturday we went back out to the house because Erin hadn't seen it since Christmas. It looked quite different from the last time she was there. We were excited because we could walk out on the deck! It was about half finished. After that we went down to show Mom our waterfalls. While down at the falls we ate our sandwiches (in the car so the bears wouldn't get us) then we headed up to Mt. Mitchell. At 6,684 feet, Mt. Mitchell is the highest point east of the Mississippi. Did I mention my mother doesn't like heights? We couldn't take the Parkway all the way because it is closed at the Craggy Gardens until next spring due to a landslide. We took the detour which took us up a beautiful (and curvy) 2-lane highway to the Parkway just past Mt. Mitchell then we had to back-track south. Robert was falling asleep at the wheel so we stopped at the "last chance gas station and restrooms before the Parkway" to empty out and get him a coffee. While Mom and I were in the store (we weren't able to use the restrooms because 50 bikers had just left and plugged up the toilet) Robert fell asleep in the car and when he woke up he told Erin he had a dream he was eating a Kit-Kat. He then explained to all of us women why even though he was falling asleep at the wheel HE had to drive instead of me. For all of you who aren't used to driving in mountains - only men can drive up the mountains. It's OK for women to drive down the mountains but not up. So, after his nap and a hot cup of black coffee and no Kit-Kat we were on our way up the mountain feeling secure because a man was behind the wheel. Once we got to the Parkway we stopped at Licklog Ridge Overlook for some photo opps.
